Helping Mary to become less reliant on her walker and cane

Mary, who lives independently in a supported living accommodation, typically uses a 4-wheeled walker for most of her walking around her flat and accommodation.

During Mary’s initial clinical assessment, it was observed that her primary challenges were in controlling her balance and regulating her gait speed. Notably, she tended to lean forward during walking, lacked control over her speed, and exhibited a deficiency in arm swing during her gait.

Marys primary goals from using Reality DTx® were to improve her balance, her walking confidence, and her overall fitness. Mary completed between 20 and 35 minutes of prescribed rehabilitation exercise games a day using Reality DTx® every day for 8 weeks.

Following Marys post rehab assessment, substantial improvements were noted. Her posture has become more upright, and both static and dynamic balance have significantly improved. Although her initial scores on timed assessments like the “timed up and go” and the “ten-meter walk test” have actually decreased, this is interpreted as a positive outcome as Mary’s movements now display greater control, reduced uncontrolled speed, and enhanced stability.

Importantly, Mary has reported a considerable reduction in her reliance on the 4-wheeled walker around her living space.

Additionally, she has also been able venture into recreational areas without the need for the walker, receiving positive feedback from friends and neighbours on her improved mobility.

Her Physiotherapist, Lynsay Mills from Get Ahead Physio said “these outcomes reflect the successful interventions aimed at optimizing her overall well-being and functional independence.”
