Helping Jon on his road to recovery

Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in October 2020, Jonathan had an extended hospital stay. On discharge several months later, he struggled with general weakness, poor balance, and mobility issues, often experiencing frequent falls.

Since returning home in 2021, Jonathan was initially reliant on a wheelchair and unable to mobilise and required a hospital bed downstairs. With the support of Horizon Neurological Rehab based in Buckinghamshire in the UK, Jonathan gradually regained the ability to walk, utilising walking poles, although his static standing balance remained a significant challenge.

The main problem for Jonathan was standing unsupported to complete tasks with his hands. Despite various sessions, both in clinic and at home, with the manual exercises Jonathan lacked motivation and intensity for significant improvement.

To address this, his neuro physiotherapist, Karen prescribed Reality DTx® off-label to specifically target Jonathan’s ability to stand unsupported while utilizing his hands.

By adapting the existing rehab games in Reality DTx® to focus on cardiovascular and strength components each week, Jonathan experienced notable postural stability improvements. Now, he can walk unaided (with AFOs but without poles), reach down to the floor, lift loads with both hands, and stand and use both hands unsupported for extended time periods without the risk of losing his balance.

Jonathan attributes his regained ability to pick things up off the floor directly to the PuzzleWalk™ rehabilitation exercise game within the Reality DTx® solution.

Additionally, his confidence has significantly improved because of these rehabilitative efforts.
